The Caen Christmas market opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 and runs until 29 December. Around fifty wooden chalets will line Place de la République and Boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc, according to the local tourist office. On opening night, a free firework display will light up the château at 9pm. After that, a big wheel, a magic lantern show and a winter festival will keep the city centre busy until early January. Here are the dates, places and practical tips for your visit to this Normandy city.
When does the Caen Christmas market open in 2026?
The Caen Christmas market runs from 28 November to 29 December 2026, according to the « Grand Noël à Caen » programme published by the city council (the Ville de Caen) on 2 November. Caen Évènements organises it. However, the city page does not list the chalets’ opening hours. Instead, it points to the official market website, so check it before you travel.
The launch takes place on Saturday 28 November. First, a parade of glowing elves sets off from Place Bouchard at 5.30pm. Then, at 9pm, a free firework display goes up above the château ramparts. Finally, Father Christmas arrives on 5 December at 5pm aboard the « Pôle Express » train.

Where is the Caen Christmas market?
The chalets stretch from Place de la République to Boulevard Maréchal-Leclerc, right in the city centre. In addition, a food chalet stands on the town hall square from 28 November to 27 December. The Advent calendar also opens there every evening.
Note that Place Saint-Sauveur does not host the chalets. Instead, it hosts Vaka, a free winter festival, from 4 to 31 December. Meanwhile, the big wheel turns on Place Courtonne, facing the Saint-Pierre marina, from 28 November to 3 January.
Advent calendar and Father Christmas’s house
The Advent calendar opens a window every evening from 1 to 23 December at 6.30pm, then on 24 December at 6pm. It is free. Father Christmas’s house welcomes children on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm, until 23 December.
What else is on around the market?
Beyond the chalets, the city offers several free events. For example, the magic lantern show « L’étincelle de Noël » lights up the Vieux-Saint-Sauveur church from 4 to 31 December. During school term, it runs from 4.30pm to 8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It opens from 11am to 8pm on Wednesdays and weekends, and every day from 19 to 30 December. It closes at 6pm on 24 and 31 December and stays shut on Christmas Day.
Two Christmas parades also take place at the Rives de l’Orne shopping centre, on 29 November and 13 December, at 3.30pm and 5pm. For families, the tourist office also lists the Caen la Mer ice rink and a Christmas ice rink in Ouistreham. However, their dates and prices still need checking.

How to get there without a car
This is the best tip of the year. According to the city, the Twisto bus and tram network will be free at weekends from 28 November to 20 December: on 28-29 November, 5-6 December, 12-13 December and 19-20 December. Shops in the centre will also open on Sundays 22 and 29 November, and on 6, 13, 20 and 27 December. In France, Sunday trading is restricted, so these openings are a real bonus.

The tourist office, Caen la Mer Tourisme, also runs evening guided walks called « Dans la ville illuminée » (the city in lights), announced for 9 and 16 December 2026. Then the château and its ramparts remain the city’s landmark, while parks offer a quiet break between events.
