Strasbourg Capital of Christmas: 3.05 million visitors in 2025 and what the figures reveal

🇫🇷 Lire cet article en français →

Strasbourg Capital of Christmas drew 3.05 million visitors in 2025, according to the review published by the city on 21 January 2026. That is below the record 3.4 million reached in 2024. Yet half of all visitors now come from the Strasbourg metropolitan area, and hotels were nearly 90% full. Crowd control, neighbourhood events and charity donations: here is what this experience can teach other towns.

Strasbourg Capital of Christmas: how many visitors in 2025?

According to the review published by the City of Strasbourg, the 2025 edition welcomed 3.05 million visitors. The year before, attendance had hit a record 3.4 million. In 2023, it stood at 3.3 million, according to the French trade magazine L’Écho touristique.

The fall is therefore moderate, at around 10%. The city does not give a detailed explanation in its review. Instead, it highlights the growing share of local residents in the crowds.

Why are more locals coming?

In 2025, half of all visitors lived in the Eurométropole, the metropolitan area grouping Strasbourg and its neighbouring communes, according to the city. A year earlier, the share was already 47.4%, up from 34% in 2023, L’Écho touristique reports. The city measures this using mobile phone data from the city centre.

The council credits neighbourhood events and family activities. Neighbourhood markets and events drew 3,600 people in 2025. In addition, the Advent Village on Square Louise-Weiss hosted around a hundred shows and concerts.

The Advent Village in figures

  • about 15,000 spectators for around a hundred artistic events;
  • nearly 3,500 people at creative workshops;
  • 3,000 school pupils taking part in dedicated activities.

What did it mean for hotels?

Hotel occupancy came close to 90% in 2025, according to the city. In 2024, it reached at least 95%, according to the head of the tourist office quoted by L’Écho touristique. At that time, bookings were made more than three months ahead on average.

These figures show how much the event matters to the local economy. However, the 2025 review does not quantify visitor spending or jobs created. So any claim about its overall economic impact should remain cautious.

Strasbourg Capital of Christmas: a charity side with figures

The city also details the donations made during the 2025 edition. This matters to councillors because the tools are simple to copy:

  • deposit-return cups raised €7,000 for food banks and food aid charities;
  • fairground exhibitors collected €6,000 for two local charities;
  • chestnut sellers gave €840 to the charity La Main du cœur;
  • the tourist office gave 5% of its December turnover to charity projects;
  • a charity Christmas tree granted gift wishes to 300 children, with 200 extra parcels.

In addition, the Sharing Village hosted 110 charities in fourteen chalets. That is 20 more than in 2024, according to the city.

What lessons for other towns?

First, measuring attendance with phone data shows where visitors come from. Second, spreading events across neighbourhoods helps attract residents. It may also ease pressure on the historic centre.

Strasbourg also tried one-way pedestrian routes on busy weekends from 2024. According to the deputy mayor quoted by L’Écho touristique, visitors did not feel the crowds were denser. Finally, some chalets reopened on 26 and 27 December 2024 for the first time, to extend the season.
