When is the Montpellier Christmas market in 2026?

The market runs from Friday 27 November to Wednesday 30 December 2026, according to the listing by Hérault Tourisme, the tourism agency of the Hérault department (a French administrative area). Specifically, it opens on 27 November at 10.30am.

Unlike many French cities, Montpellier keeps its market open after Christmas. In fact, it stays open during the week between Christmas and New Year, when families on holiday look for things to do.

Closing days to know

However, the market will be closed to the public on four days:

  • Monday 30 November;
  • Monday 7 December;
  • Monday 14 December;
  • Friday 25 December, Christmas Day.

Where is the Montpellier Christmas market?

The market is set up on the Promenade Royale du Peyrou, one of the city’s best-known landmarks, next to the Écusson, the historic centre. Moreover, the official listing gives the address as Rue la Blottière, 34000 Montpellier.

Note that the site is raised and open-air. Access is « subject to weather conditions », Hérault Tourisme warns: for example, in strong wind or rain, the market may close or reduce its activity.

Montpellier Christmas market opening hours

The published hours for the 2026 edition are:

  • Sunday to Thursday: 10.30am to 9.30pm;
  • Friday and Saturday: 10.30am to 10.30pm (late openings);
  • Thursday 24 December: 10.30am to 6pm.

The Friday and Saturday late openings continue, Le Bonbon Montpellier confirms. Meanwhile, the tourist office says the full events programme is « to come ». Also, details may still change, so check them before you set off.

How much does it cost?

Entry is free. Just as at all Christmas markets, you only pay for what you buy, eat or drink.

What the 90 chalets offer

In total, the market has 90 chalets. Le Bonbon Montpellier describes « nearly 90 chalets of local craftspeople », with designers and gift ideas. Furthermore, the City of Montpellier organises the market and selects stallholders through an application process, with a separate application for drinks stalls.

For craftspeople, producers and food businesses in the Hérault, these five weeks are an important showcase. Indeed, the market draws residents from across the metropolitan area and holidaymakers in the south of France.

Tips for visiting

First, weekday afternoons are the quietest times. By contrast, Friday and Saturday late openings draw bigger crowds. Similarly, check the weather forecast, especially when the mistral or tramontane winds blow.

The market stays open during the French school Christmas holidays, except on 25 December, so it makes an easy family outing between the festivities. Travelling around the region? Read our guide to the Toulouse Christmas market or the French version: Marché de Noël de Montpellier 2026.
