The Lille tourism figures for 2026 are clearly positive: from January to June, hotels and tourist residences in the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL, the inter-municipal authority grouping Lille and its surrounding towns) recorded 1,818,348 overnight stays, up 10.3% on 2025. These figures, drawn from MEL data, its tourism observatory and the consultancy MKG Consulting, were published by La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Foreign visitor numbers rose sharply, driven by the Braderie and neighbouring markets. This case study shows what events and good data can bring to a destination.

What do the Lille tourism figures show?
The data cover the period from 1 January to 21 August 2026. They were presented in an article by La Gazette Nord-Pas-de-Calais on 9 September 2026 (in French), based on figures from the MEL, its Observatoire métropolitain du tourisme and MKG Consulting.
First, the headline figure concerns paid accommodation. From January to June, hotels and tourist residences in the metropolitan area recorded 1,818,348 overnight stays. In other words, that is an increase of 10.3% on the same period in 2025.
An overnight stay means one night spent by one person in accommodation. As a result, this measure captures real visitor activity, beyond a simple headcount.
Hotels almost full
On Saturday 5 August, the occupancy rate of hotels and tourist residences reached 97.1%, up 3.4 on 2025, according to the same data. The article does not say whether this means percentage points or per cent.
Where do foreign visitors come from?
Above all, the sharpest rise concerns international visitors. In central Lille, across paid and unpaid accommodation, the number of foreign tourists rose by 29%.
Changes by country, as reported by La Gazette:
- Belgium: +12% compared with 2025;
- Netherlands: +40% over the Braderie period, and +122% in July 2026 compared with July 2025;
- Germany: +130%;
- United States: +120% over the Braderie period, and +36% in July;
- Spain: +75%.
In addition, the share of foreign overnight stays rose in July 2026 compared with 2025, although no exact figure was given.

How events drive the Lille tourism figures
The Braderie de Lille, a giant street market and flea market, remains the main driver. According to La Gazette, it attracts nearly 2 million visitors over three days every year. However, no attendance figure specific to the 2026 edition was published in this report.
Moreover, the sharp increases in Dutch and American visitors during the Braderie show the pull of an internationally known event. Consequently, for hoteliers, this means nights that are almost fully booked.
Furthermore, the MEL runs a tourism observatory that tracks visitor numbers all year round. As a result, this allows local councillors and the tourist office to measure the impact of events, compare years and adjust their marketing.
Lessons for other destinations
Overall, this case study is useful for towns and inter-municipal authorities that want to grow tourism. Three lessons stand out. First, one major popular event can lift a whole season. Second, being close to neighbouring countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands is a strong asset for a border city. Finally, measuring overnight stays and visitor origin precisely helps decide where to invest.

Next up: the winter season
Winter is now the next step for tourism businesses in the metropolitan area. For instance, the Christmas market on Place Rihour draws many visitors every year. Therefore, for hoteliers and restaurants, the challenge is to extend the summer momentum to the end of the year with short festive breaks. Read the full French version: Bilan touristique Lille 2026.
