Grenoble Christmas market 2026: 20 November to 24 December on Place Victor-Hugo

The Grenoble Christmas market 2026 will run from Friday 20 November to Thursday 24 December on Place Victor-Hugo. The City of Grenoble organises it directly, and it brings together around a hundred exhibitors: food vendors, shopkeepers and craftspeople. The city has also launched a call for artists to bring the square to life, with street shows, choirs, DJ sets and workshops for children. Here is what we know, and what this council-run model can teach other towns.

Grenoble is a city in the French Alps, in the Isère département, one of the administrative areas into which France is divided. It is surrounded by mountains.

Grenoble Christmas market 2026: what are the dates?

First, the market opens on Friday 20 November 2026. It then closes on Thursday 24 December 2026, Christmas Eve. These dates appear in the call for applications published by the City of Grenoble for the 2026 edition.

As a result, the market lasts just over five weeks. Unlike some other cities, it does not continue into the school holidays after Christmas. To compare with other large cities, see our guide to Christmas market opening dates across France.

Where is the Grenoble Christmas market?

The market sets up on Place Victor-Hugo, right in the city centre. This large square lies between the railway station and the old town. You can therefore combine your visit with a walk in the historic centre or a trip up to the Bastille fort.

In addition, the city sets aside one unheated chalet for craft workshops and storytelling for children. The city had not yet published the stalls’ opening hours at the time of writing. You should therefore check them on the city’s website before you go.

What events are planned at the Grenoble Christmas market?

The city has issued a call for artists for short, unamplified performances. The aim is clear: to liven up the square without disturbing exhibitors or local residents. The document sets out the time slots it is looking for.

  • Roaming street shows: Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 9pm, and Sunday from 5pm to 7pm;
  • DJ sets lasting one to two hours, on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm;
  • Choirs and small acoustic brass bands, mainly in the afternoon;
  • Craft workshops and storytelling for children, ideally on Wednesdays and at weekends.

This programme therefore gives an idea of the highlights. The evenings from Thursday to Saturday should be the liveliest. By contrast, Wednesday and weekend afternoons are aimed mainly at families.

Why does this model interest local councillors?

Some cities hand their market to a private organiser, as Nantes does with the company 2A Organisation. In Grenoble, by contrast, the city itself runs the market and selects the performances. It therefore keeps control over the atmosphere, the show times and the space given to local artists.

Moreover, the call for artists is a simple tool to copy. It sets short formats, precise time slots and noise limits. A small town can therefore use it as a model for its own market, even on a tight budget.

What should a town check before launching such a call?

First, it needs to define the time slots and the type of show it wants. Next, it should plan the practical conditions, such as shelter or electricity. Finally, it must set a clear application deadline and publish it early enough.

Tips for visiting Grenoble in December

If you drive in from the surrounding mountains, think about winter equipment. Isère is one of the départements covered by the French Mountain Law, which requires winter tyres or snow chains in winter, as we explain in our French article on winter tyre rules. In the city itself, the tram and bicycles remain the easiest options. You can also read the original French version of this article.
